Introducing the Minnesota Comic Book Association MNCBA
In the wake of Nick’s passing, three longtime volunteers assumed leadership of the MCBA and did their best to continue the traditions that Nick had established so successfully. In 2019, the name of the organization was changed to the Midwest Comic Book Fans, or MCBF, and was rebranded with a new logo and website shortly before COVID-19 struck. And looking ahead to October, FallCon will be a two-day event at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds Grandstand in 2024, just as the MCBA event was before the pandemic. The MNCBA is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to help support costs for the return to this venue. Following the events of “The Armageddon Game,” the heroes of the Splinter Clan found themselves struggling with how to move forward with their lives.
Though things could have ended with a whimper, the storyline instead closed out with one of the most brutal endings of all time, not to mention one that would have long-lasting ramifications for nearly every character involved. The Turtles are backed against the wall, and need to work with Shredder to stop Krang. Obviously, this doesn’t go as planned, and the result is incredibly exciting. This also features Bebop and Rocksteady at their most deadly when they give Donatello a life-threatening beating that changes the course of the series.
It examines the inner world of each of these characters meaningfully, offering them all time to decompress and air their feelings. While this isn’t world-shattering by any means, it is a welcome change of pace for these books. One of the coolest parts of these TMNT comics is the other mutants they introduce. Sure, sentient mutants besides the Turtles and Splinter have MidwestComicbookFans.com often existed in the franchise, but rarely in such numbers. This story heavily features Hob’s vigilante group, the Mutanimals, as Michelangelo joins the team.
In the IDW comics, he is the actual reincarnation of Hamato Yoshi and was once a ninja of the Foot Clan himself. He eventually leads the clan again, which reveals a lot about his morality. This version of Donatello quickly loses his connection with reality and turns against his “brothers.” While initially going by “Metal-Don,” he dumps this nickname and all of Donatello’s morality. This leaves Metalhead as an unfeeling, hyper-intelligent machine who knows all of the Turtles’ weaknesses. This cool story establishes a major villain and further explores Donatello’s character. Northampton spends a lot of time exploring the feelings of the Turtles, Splinter, April, and Casey.

As a result, the franchise isn’t exactly known for deep emotional moments. This storyline takes place after a massive battle between the Turtles and their various foes. Order from Chaos greatly explores what Michelangelo brings to the team. When Hob betrays his new friends, Mikey defends them and stops the cat’s plans.
COMMUNITY EXHIBITORS
Hal has been heavily involved in fan, geek, and gaming culture since the dark ages of dial-up. She spends her time administrating several online communities, writing, and giving marketing advice to comic book professionals. And they have instituted a modest fee for creator tables, which had always been free at MCBA/MCBF events. Frigon explained that the tables being free meant that sometimes creators would register but not show up.
- Plus, the series has been running continuously since 2011, with plenty of spin-offs, crossovers, and miniseries.
- The Turtles are backed against the wall, and need to work with Shredder to stop Krang.
- The arc sees Splinter begin to hide things from his sons as he attempts to do what he thinks is best for the Foot Clan and the city.
- Over the more than four decades that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has dominated pop culture, the series has introduced many fan-favorite characters beyond just the Heroes in a Half Shell.
- MNCBA had been anticipating about 300 attendees, but over 600 people came to last spring’s event.

Along the way, the Turtles discovered new facets to their origin story, leaving heartbreaking paradoxes and heartbroken versions of themselves scattered throughout the timeline. In the end, the Splinter Clan was saved, yet fractured, so much so that each of the Turtles would go their separate ways rather than try to stick around and put things back together.
